Penny Dreadful only just wrapped up it's second spectacular season, but production has already gotten underway on season three, with filming beginning in Ireland for an expected airing next spring. And with new productions comes news of new additions to the cast. All the main cast that survived the finale will be returning, along with some new faces. A new series regular has been added: Kaetenay, "an intense, enigmatic Native American with a deep connection to Ethan who also becomes an ally to Sir Malcolm" will be played by Wes Studi, and seems to be replacing Sembene. Though hopefully his role will be less thankless than the character he is replacing.
Patti LuPone, who appeared in a single episode of season two as Vanessa's mentor, the "cut wife" and sister to the season's protagonist, will return to the series in an entirely new role, that of Dr. Seward, an American therapist who "treats Vanessa with an unusual new approach." While we can assume for now that it was simply that creator John Logan was impressed with LuPone's performance and wanted to keep her around, nothing can be taken as "simply" on this show, and we shall have to wait and see. Sam Barnett will join LuPone as Dr. Seward's "mysterious young secretary."
Christian Camargo will appear as Dr. Alexander Sweet, "a zoologist who strikes up an unlikely friendship with Vanessa." and Jessica Barden will play as Justine, "a young acolyte to Lily and Dorian." But most excitingly is the announcement that another canon character will be entering the midst of this league of extraordinarily messed up gentlemen: Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Henry Jekyll (and presumably his counter part, the nefarious Mr. Hyde) will make an appearance, played by Shazad Latif. Latif has Pakistani heritage, and I'm very excited to see how that will be incorporated into the character, if at all (at least, visually, it'll be the most exciting Dr. Jekyll since James Nesbitt).
I think the big take away from this is: more established characters will be included, and it appears we'll be venturing at least in part away from Victorian London and into the American Old West this season. And honestly, that's all I ever want.
