When Luther finished up it's third series, I thought it was a perfect end to a bizarre and thrilling show, and ended exactly the way it should have. Series creator Neil Cross apparently disagrees, because the show is coming back. After failing to get a prequel film greenlit, and with the (thankful) collapse of the American remake, Cross and series star Idris Elba are returning to the distraught detective for a two part special, to air ont eh BBC later this year. Said Cross:
"Ever since we said goodbye to John Luther on Southwark Bridge, there's hardly been a minute when I didn't wonder what happened next," creator Neil Cross said. "So I decided to find out. We're putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work."Which is all well and good, so long as it doesn't undermine the ending that the series gave John back in 2013. Which it might, considering the news that co-star/series highlight Ruth Wilson will not be returning for the special as Alice, presumably because of Wilson's involvement with the Showtime series The Affair. Confirmed to be returning alongside Elba are Michael Smiley and Dermot Crowley as Benny Silver and Martin Schenk. New to the series will be former Game of Thrones actress Rose Leslie, as well as Laura Haddock, Darren Boyd, John Heffernan and Patrick Malahide. As to what Luther will be getting up to, the BBC have released this statement:
"Luther’s back. Pitted against his most chilling adversary yet, haunted by the ghosts of his past and hell-bent on retribution, he’s drawn into a terrifyingly complex case that pushes him closer to the edge than he’s ever been."
Series producer Elizabeth Kilgarriff added, "Neil Cross has pulled out all the stops to make this the biggest, scariest story yet." So... that's a lot to live up to. I've no doubt that Cross and Co. is capable. And I'm perfectly alright with more Luther, so long as it's worth while reopening old wounds.
